Gums that are too low – Gummy smile or irregular gum line

A number of things can cause your gums to be too low or too high. Gums that cover a large portion of your teeth can make your teeth look small. A low gum line can be brought on by genetics, underlying health conditions or by taking certain medication.

Gum contouring

Periodontal plastic procedures (aesthetic gum surgery) can be performed to enhance your smile. Also, known as gum reshaping, gum contouring is a procedure that removes excess gum tissues to expose more of the crown on the tooth to create a proportionate look of gum tissue and tooth surface.

The procedure can also be used on uneven gum to create a consistently even and aesthetically pleasing gum line. Although gum contouring alone is an aesthetic procedure, some patients undergo it as part of other periodontal treatments, such as crown lengthening and pocket reduction. These surgical procedures can be performed to prevent or correct developmental, anatomical, traumatic or plaque-induced defects of the gums, alveolar bone, thus improving your smile.

During a gum countering surgery, our qualified dentists and experienced periodontists will numb the gums with a mild local anaesthetic and use a soft tissue laser to remove the excess gum, creating an elongated set of teeth with an even gum line.

Gums that are too high – Gum recession

Gums that are too high make your teeth appear longer and are often caused by gum recession, a condition which causes gum tissue to pull back from a tooth and expose the tooth’s root. Not only can gum recession make your teeth look longer, it can also lead to serious dental problems such as tooth decay and tooth loss. Gum recession may also be a sign of periodontal disease – the deterioration of the supporting gums and bone structures of the teeth. Various causes can lead to exposed tooth roots which may then result in root sensitivity, food plaque accumulation or an uneven gum line with the neighbouring teeth. A gum graft surgery aims to cover the gum recession area and help to prevent further recession and the loss of its underlying bone. Gum surgery can be performed to graft gum tissue back to its original contour. The gum graft can be taken from the patient’s own palate or other gum tissue.

Your gums add to the beauty of your smile

You might consider having aesthetic gum surgery if you would like to improve your gummy smile, uneven gum line, long and exposed teeth roots or defects in your gums and jawbone.

It is important to take note that the foundation (gums and bones) of the teeth needs to be healthy before proceeding with this procedure. Gum diseases have to be treated before such procedures can be carried out. Each case is special.
