Our Specialist

Orthodontics is a dental specialty focused on correcting teeth and jaw alignment issues using braces, aligners, and other appliances. It aims to not only to improve the appearance of a patient’s smile, but also to enhance oral health by ensuring that teeth and jaws function properly. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean and less prone to decay and gum disease, and well-aligned jaws can help prevent issues with chewing, speech, and even sleep.

Dr Woo Mei Yee is the Resident Orthodontist at The Dental Studio with over 24 years of experience. Her clinical interests include Dental-Facial Orthopaedics in Children, Surgical Orthodontics and Facial Aesthetics related to Orthodontics.

The Process

1. Examination

A dentist first examine your teeth and facial profile and discusses which type of appliance (braces or aligners) suits you.

2. Treatment Plan

A treatment plan would be developed for you by the dentist. A scan or impression of your teeth will be taken, and a mock up of the appliance will be created.

3. Placing the appliance

When the appliance is ready, you will be required to come back to the clinic for fitting or attachment and guidance instructions by the dentist.

4. Adjustments

If you opted for metal or ceramic braces, you will need to visit the dentist monthly for adjustments of your braces. For Invisalign, you will have a bi-weekly review.

Common Questions

When should I do braces?

The ideal age is usually 12 to 14 years old, when all the adult teeth have fully erupted. It is recommended for children to have an early examination at age 6 to determine the best time and type of treatment.

It is also not too late for adults to wear dental braces as long as you do not have dental conditions such as gum diseases.

What is it like to have braces?

Discomfort and mild soreness is expected and experienced in the first 4 days to a week after braces are put on.

This is because your teeth are beginning to re-align and adjust to the pressure from the arch wire and elastic ties. If your pain threshold is low, and your teeth are not extremely crooked, clear removable aligners (invisible braces) could be your best bet.

What if I have dental disease?

Dental disease should be treated before braces are commenced.

What is the age limit for braces?

There is no age limit for braces treatment.

How long will the treatment take?

The average treatment takes about two years. Every case is different and unique. Consult our dentist to learn about your condition and start your braces treatment.
